I've only ever basted around the outside in fives to match the heavy lines on the chart, and sometimes the centre lines. Never seen the point of gridding the whole thing. I tend to fold to find the centre and then count out to the edge and go around (if my fabric is already the right size, if I'm working on a larger piece I've yet to cut down to size I'll just start at a corner leaving an appropriate margin). That ensures that it's centred and that there is enough fabric - and I also mark the top, cos there is nothing worse than having an almost square design and managing to flip the fabric before you start and having the square the wrong way and almost running out of fabric (yep, done that - learnt from experience). So now if nothing else, I count one edge across and one up to make sure there is enough fabric, and mark the top and/or bottom.

I've never understood how their gridding system is revolutionary either. Or how you never have to count more than 10. Ok so each square is only 10, but you still have to count the number of squares to get your hunderds, and the only time I'd consider gridding would be for a very large piece that had more than 10 squares in each direction.
