Is there anything I can do to remove the smell? Its charts and fabrics that came with the charts, ditto with some floss for a few of the kits.

You can try airing them out on a covered or protected porch (the charts), and if it's not dusty or damp where you are, you could hang the fabrics and floss
on a clothesline out of sunlight for a few hours. That might help a lot. Aside from that, I wouldn't febreeze the fabrics and floss or anything. If
they're not hand dyed, you can wash them with no worries...even if they are, you can often do a quick and gentle rinse in cold water without ruining the
dye.

I've heard of putting the charts in a large plastic bag with ground coffee beans or activated charcoal (think an open bag with the stash inside another bag
with the coffee or charcoal). I don't know if the outside bag should be closed or not, though.
Good luck. That would drive me absolutely nuts and send all three of us into migraines. Charisse |

The floss and the fabrics I'd just have to wash them. The books/charts... good luck.............

I would wash the fabrics. For the books/charts, maybe air them outside with a sheet or half a sheet of scented fabric softener. That may help a bit.

Do you have a clothes rack (realising that Auckland is not the driest place on earth at this time of year!)?Peg the charts to the clothes horse and leave them
for a few days in an airy spot, out of any sun that happens to be wandering by (if there is sun wandering by, send it on its way 'cos it's obviously
lost and just causing mischief! LOL!).
The coffee grounds trick should work for the fabric and threads. |

Thanks everyone, will give all your suggestions a go! It's just so annoying cause she made no mention they were from a smoking home, but of course I
didn't ask either ~_~
Lesson learned! Charisse I ended up having to put them all outside my bedroom cause there was no way I could sleep with that stink!
And Catherine, haven't forgotten teh emails
It's foggy weather here so I'll put em on the clothes horse first and see if that works, then upgrade to the coffee beans.

One other thing I suppose you could try (I'd probably try it as a last resort): Lightly misting the charts with Fabreeze.

I can assure you the stash you'll be getting from me is clean - no stinky, smelly smoke smell!

I lived for a while in an apartment where secondhand smoke came in from somewhere (never able to pinpoint as none of my neighbours smoked). The smell
permeated everything. Plus I developed bad allergies to it. When I moved I washed all my clothes. I was able to get the smell out of some fabrics, but not
others no matter how many times I washed them - so I had to get rid of a lot of stuff. Same with my cross stitch stash.
I've put things in drawers with a box of baking soda (didn't work). Also tried with activated charcoal put inside the foot part of pantyhose. Didn't help much. If you try it, be careful because charcoal dust will come through the pantyhose. I put paper towel underneath. I've washed floss in Woolite - sometimes the smell comes out and sometimes not, guess it depends how bad they were beforehand. I've taken to washing floss in baby shampoo (the one I used recently is called Simply Kids, which may be the store brand, not sure, but most baby shampoos will be about the same). This works better than anything I've come across so far. I haven't tried fabreeze because I have problems with fragrances and that's just adding more fragrance to the cigarette smoke. A lot of the baby shampoos have very little scent. As for patterns, I've got a bunch on the top shelf of a closet, in magazine holders, with a box of baking soda keeping them company. I doubt it's taken the smell away but at least the smell is contained to that small area in the cupboard, and I don't smell the smoke when I open the cupboard. I haven't worked with any of the patterns stored there so don't know if the smell has gone, but doubt it (cigarette smoke is a tough smell to get rid of). If I find I can't use them, I'll photocopy the patterns and get rid of the originals. Good luck. Arleen |

I had the same thing happen once and bought Zorb-X from the drug store and spritzed it on and it worked WONDERS. Better than Febreeze did even!!!
