Posts: 229 06/21/09 2:51 AM	Tags : None Well come on, sometimes I think collecting pretty fabrics is like collecting TREASURE! Ahem... so I have fallen in love with all the pretty fabrics I keep seeing on this forum and was wondering how one could slowly (and hopefully cheapfully) build a nice stash of pretty fabrics to "pick and choose" from? I recently did a "window shop" for some basic coloured Zweigarts and gulped at how much it totalled; I really want to get the hand dyed fabbies too, but the cost I know is going to be scarier. Posts: 1330 06/21/09 3:05 AM	Well, I almost always only buy fabrics with a specific project in mind. THat definitely helps. I'll make exceptions for really great LE things like the Silkweavers, and I often buy a couple different fabrics for a project to see which I like best, but I rarely just buy a fabric because I like it with no idea of what I'd use it for. That helps. Posts: 65 06/21/09 5:31 AM	Buy it on sale, the biggest cut you can afford, even if you don't have a project in mind. If you love it and it looks like it would suit a certain "family" of stitching (for example, mermaids, fairies, samplers, etc) then get it. Some you may never see again. If it is for a project you are starting you cut the piece you need for your project, the rest gets put away for another project. Eventually you will end up with a fabric stash which is fun to dive into for a new project. Like any other collection, know yourself. Some people find themselves with too much after awhile.

Posts: 128 06/21/09 6:22 AM	at one point i had over 100 pieces of hand dyed in my stash but had a clear out as I kept forgetting what i had, my tip would be to keep to the count and fabric type you usually use, buy on sale get solos, colour of the week, join a fabric of the month club etc as they offer good discounts, and to buy in stages and before you know it you will have more than you will ever need. I made the mistake early on of buying anything-then had fabbies I knew I would never use-now i am more picky -I choose colours that will go well with the things I like to stitch. I try to buy colours of the week, solos, and sale items. Posts: 443 06/21/09 12:30 PM	Hello, my name is Beth, and I am a SW Solo addict. When I see something I like, I buy it because I know I will never see another one like it again. I do have a list of projects, and play with the fabric and pics of the projects during the hour before the fabric is available for sale. When I get the fabric, a make a note of what I think I am going to use it for, and attach it to the fabric. Sometimes I have more than one project in mind for that piece of fabric, and it is noted. I don't have a huge stash (20) pieces. I've only "ordered" 3 pieces of fabric in the last 2 years, and that was because I saw something someone else did, and I loved the fabric they used. Posts: 220 06/21/09 2:25 PM Fancy Stash Scrimper	I was a member of 4 different hand dyed fabric clubs before, that way you can have the fabbies way cheaper than regular price. With what I accumulated (I'm at over 140 pieces of FQs) from 2007 up to now and with the current recession, I reduced the membership to just 2. I also buy when someone sell their stash of hand dyeds, those SW solos and color of the week or ebay. Ericille

Posts: 128 06/21/09 2:28 PM	all this talk of hand dyeds has made me look at my own stash again and i found a few i would never use as they are cashel and I really hate stitching on cashel but bought them as I LOVED the colour, anyway ive listed them for sale in the for sale section, oh and they are mostly smf. so one tip is if you are buying to use at some point, stick with fabrics you enjoy using regardless of how much you love the colour. ive had those for almost 2 years and never been tempted to use them because i hate cashel so much, any other type of fabric and they would have been used ages ago Your Signature ...http://community.webshots.com/user/emmaslittleangels
